studies in the largely unexplored field of

China and to continue a journal that recor

such studies, deserve encouragement.

Though the sum that is required for the

purpose is comparatively small, I gather that

an additional annual income of £175 would meet

his needs, we have been unable to hold out any

hope of this being forthcoming from Government

sources. As he told me that he was sending

a copy of his Memorandum in which his aims and

needs are described to the Secretary of the

Universities China Committee, I venture to

write to you as its Chairman to express a hope

that this Memorandum will receive sympathetic

consideration in conjunction of course with

other claims on your resources.
